In October, 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the California Dream Act, which would have enabled qualifying illegal aliens to apply for a waiver of community college fees and/or for Cal Grant Entitlement. Proponents had argued that immigrant children who have graduated and completed at least three years of high school in California should not be penalized for their parents' decision to bring them to the United States illegally. In vetoing the bill, Schwarzenegger said he was opposed to extending aid to illegal aliens because it would put a strain on the California General Fund at a time when students with legal status are already paying increased tuition fees. Several other states, though, have passed laws providing in-state tuition benefits to illegal immigrants, including Texas, New York, Utah, Illinois, Washington, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Kansas. On the other hand, the Federal government and the majority of individual states do not agree and they reserve financial aid only for legal residents. What do you think should be done?
