Under a new law passed this year, children of undocumented immigrant workers in Illinois can attend universities and community colleges in the state at the in-state tuition rate; previously, they had been required to pay out-of-state tuition.
The bill was passed, according to Governor Rod Blagojevich, because "Every Illinois high school student should have the same opportunity to go to college regardless of their immigration status."
Opponents to the bill have predicted that lower tuition rates would encourage illegal immigration and take college seats away from legal citizens. Phyllis Schlafly, president of the Eagle Forum, explained her opposition to the newly-enacted law this way: "We're just loading the cost of illegal aliens onto the taxpayers."
