Most Lucrative College Majors

25 Nov 2003

According to the latest figures from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), there are several college majors that give you the "biggest bang for your college buck." Technology students are in the money, but humanities students may be out of luck.

What is your degree worth? Here is a partial list of NACE's findings for the average starting salary by degree:

  • Pharmaceutical: $81,235

  • Chemical Engineering: $52,853

  • Computer Engineering: $51,720

  • Electrical Engineering: $49,946

  • Mechanical Engineering: $48,441

  • Computer Sciences: $47,419

  • Civil Engineering: $41,352

  • Management/Information Systems: $40,915

  • Economics/Finance: $40,764

  • Accounting: $40,546

  • Nursing: $38,751

  • Business: $47,1220

  • History: $32,108

  • English: $30,157

While some of these starting salaries were lower than last year (computer science down 4.4%, computer engineering down 7.6%), a number increased this year: pharmaceutical up 4.0%; accounting up 2.0%; and nursing up 2.5%.
