According to the 2004 Salary Survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, college graduates can expect to make--on the average--$41,110 on their first job. Graduates in some majors can expect to fare even better. The average beginning salaries in these lucrative majors are, in order:

Chemical engineering, $52,819
- Computer engineering, $51,572
- Computer science, $49,691
- Mechanical engineering, $48,864

Information sciences and systems, $43,053

Management information systems (MIS), $42,098

Civil engineering, $42,053
Not all majors earned these high starting salaries. The lowest paying majors, in 2004, include psychology ($27,791), liberal arts ($30,152), and political science/government ($32,999).
