Your first step in applying for federal student aid is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applications may be submitted beginning in January of each year, for students who will be in college that Fall. It is important to submit the form as soon as possible in the new year, since many federal programs are first-come first-served. Here are some tips to help you:

Tip: You can file the FAFSA electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov. There are several advantages to filing electronically, including saving your work as you go, being alerted if you've made an error, and accelerating the processing of your application. Be sure to apply for a PIN on the Department of Education's web site, if you plan to file electronically. But, if you prefer paper, just check with your college financial aid office or high school guidance counselor for an application form.

Tip: You'll need to complete your IRS tax forms (or your parents' forms, if you are not an independent student) as soon as possible, because much of the information required on the FAFSA directly relates to line items on the federal tax forms. But, you don't need to file your tax forms before submitting your FAFSA. And, you'll find much of the information you need on your (or your parents') W-2 form or December 31 pay stub.
