1992 Reference Service Press
Award Winner

Jane Pickering Kleiner, head of Reference Services at the Louisiana State University Libraries in Baton Rouge, is the 1992 recipient of the Reference and Adult Services (RASD) Reference Service Press Award.

The award, $1,000 and a plaque donated by Reference Service Press, Inc., is given to an author of the most outstanding article published in RQ during the preceding two volume years.

Kleiner, who is also a member of the adjunct faculty at the Louisiana State University School of Library and Information Services, received the award for an article titled "Ensuring Quality Reference Desk Service: The Introduction of a Peer Process," published in RQ, Spring 1991. The article describes a peer review study in the LSU Libraries that involved all reference desk assistants. The object was to improve reference service. Included in the article are the results and a checklist for others wanting to initiate a peer desk review process.

"The RASD Reference Service Press Award Committee found that Ms. Kleiner's article was valuable for any reference department regardless of size or audience," said Catharine Gibson, committee chair. "The article was concise and practical."

Editor of RASD Update, Kleiner has contributed to several state, regional, and national publications. She has a bachelor's degree and two master's degrees--in journalism and library science--all from Louisiana State University.
