The Reference Service Press Awards honors Lynn C. Hattendorf, reference librarian at the University of Illinois in Chicago, in recognition of her having published the most outstanding article in the journal RQ during the two volume years preceding 1987.
The winning article, "College and University Rankings: An Annotated Bibliography of Analysis, Criticism and Evaluation," appeared in RQ, the professional journal for reference librarianship, in the spring of 1986, volume 25, number 3. Want to read this award-winning article online? Click here.
In announcing the award, Deborah C. Masters, chair of the award committee, reported, "This realizes the goal of librarians to offer improved guidance to patrons seeking advice on evaluation of college and university programs. It assists patrons across a wide spectrum of populations: university administrators, potential students, parents, and others."
The Reference Service Press Award is judged on the basis of an article's ability to provide an evaluative assessment of the sources considered and to demonstrate excellence in quality of writing, relevance, originality, timeliness and validity of methods used.
The award, which carries a $500 cash prize, is donated by Reference Service Press.
