Craig Gibson

1997 Reference Service Press
Award Winner

Craig Gibson, associate director for information services at George Mason University Libraries in Fairfax, Virginia, is the 1997 recipient of the Reference Service Press Award, presented by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) of the American Library Association (ALA).

The award, $1,000 and a plaque donated by Reference Service Press Inc., is given to the author of the most outstanding article published in RQ, RUSA's official journal, during the preceding two volume years.

Gibson received the award for "Critical Thinking: Implications for Instruction," which appeared in the Fall, 1995 RQ, volume 35, number 1 (pages 27-35) . Want to read this award-winning article online? Click here.

"Gibson pulls from the literature of education and psychology to define and clarify a topic of much interest in librarianship today--critical thinking," said David Null, chair of the Reference Service Press Award Committee. "Gibson looks at the pros and cons of trying to apply critical thinking to bibliographic instruction and offers useful suggestions on how librarians can teach critical thinking skills. The article does a very good job of demystifying an important concept in public services librarianship."
