Award Winners
The Reference Service Press Award, $1,500 and a plaque donated by Reference Service Press Inc., is given annually to the author(s) of the most outstanding article published in Reference and User Services Quarterly (formerly RQ), the official journal of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA, formerly RASD), during the preceding two volume years. The winning article is selected on the basis of originality, timeliess, relevance to RUSA's areas of interest and concern, and quality of writing.
The 2001 Reference Service Press Award is given to Donald G. Frank, Katharine L. Calhoun, W. Bruce Henson, M. Leslie Madden, and Gregory K. Raschke for their article on "The Changing Nature of Reference and Information Services: Predictions and Realities" (vol. 39, no. 2, Winter, 1999, pages 151-157). The article was selected to receive the 2001 award because it provides "a thoughtful survey of changing concepts of reference service over the past 15 years," according to the Jean Alexander, chair of the 2001 award committee.
Using broad outlines illustrated with key examples and research studies, the authors discuss developments in reference services, information media and access, organizational structures, roles and expectations, and leadership. The value of this retrospective analysis, stated Alexander, is that it "allows the reader the opportunity to understand and reflect not only on the past, but also on the present and future of reference librarianship in libraries of all types."
Frank is the associate director of Millar Library at Portland State University. Calhoun, Henson, and Madden also work at Millar Library, as head of corporate and research services, assistant head of reference, and reference librarian and information consultant, respectively. Raschke is head of technical resources and information consultant at the Library Information Center, Georgia Institute of Technology.
