The Reference and Adult Services division (RASD) of the American Library Association has announced that Elfreda A. Chatman has won the 1988 Reference Service Press Award. This award, $500 and a plaque, is donated by Reference Service Press and is presented in recognition of the most outstanding article published in RQ, the division's journal, from Fall 1985 through Summer 1987.
Carl Orgren, chair of the award committee, said "The committee members were unanimous in selecting Dr. Elfreda Chatman's article 'Opinion Leadership, Poverty, and Information Sharing' for its rigorous treatment of a significant issue." Want to read this award-winning article online? Clickhere.
Chatman, who holds a Ph.D. in library and information studies from the University of California at Berkeley and a master's degree in library science from Case Western Reserve University, is assistant professor in the School of Library Science at the University of North Carolina. Her article tested the theory of opinion leadership in a low-income environment.
The award has been funded annually since 1985 by Reference Service Press, a library-oriented reference book publishing company.
